One small piece of the puzzle for why people call the police might be because going and talking to a kid carries its own risks, especially if you are a man. There’s the makings of a good black comedy there: good Samaritan asks a kid if he’s lost only to find himself shortly thereafter sharing a jail cell with the parents.

When my daughter was born my wife was feeling pretty good after 24 hours and wanted to get home. There were no problems with my kid at all—she was perfectly fine, happy as a clam. The nurses insisted we were “not allowed” to leave the hospital for 48 hours post-childbirth. At one point I overhead them in the hallway threatening to call CPS if we left. I of course asked to speak to the attending physician and he was like, “yeah, you’re fine, go ahead and leave.” Which, of course, because a hospital is not a prison.

The word “Karen” has gone out of fashion for many reasons. Perhaps the detractors are right and it is a misogynistic term, I take no position in this dispute either way. But there’s something useful in having a culturally salient term to describe the miniature totalitarians among us. They very much exist. And they live to threaten you with CPS.
